Public Lecture by Prof. Azyumardi AzraIslam and Democracy in Indonesia: Prospects beyond the 2014 Elections
Prof. Azyumardi Azra, Director of Graduate School, Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta; a leading historian and Islam expert in Indonesia, was awarded the Academic Prize of the Fukuoka Prize in 2014.
The Nippon Foundation has a long association with Professor Azra, who has been a member of the International Selection Committee of the Nippon Foundation Asian Public Intellectuals (API) Fellowships Program.
To commemorate the honor bestowed on him, we will be organizing a Public Lecture on the topic “Islam and Democracy in Indonesia: Prospects beyond the 2014 Elections.”

Profile of Prof. Azyumardi AZRA
Born March 4, 1955 (59 years old), Prof. Azra is an Indonesian historian and a professor of History and graduate school director at Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University, Jakarta.
He is a leading historian, innovative educator, and Islam expert who advocates a moderate interpretation of Islam. Was born in a suburb of Padang in western Sumatra in 1955. Studied at Colombia University in New York, where he received an M.A. in Middle Eastern Studies and a Ph.D in history. He is the author of many books and academic papers, including The Origins of Islamic Reformism in Southeast Asia (2004).
Was instrumental in establishing Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University, Jakarta and served as its first rector (2002–06). Chaired the International Association of Historians of Asia from 2010 to 2012, and has also played an important role at international academic and research institutions.
He was a key member of the Indonesian National Research Council and the Indonesian Academy of Sciences, and in 2005, was awarded one of Indonesia’s highest honors: the Bintang Mahaputera Utama. He has been a member of the International Selection Committee of the Nippon Foundation Fellowships for Asian Public Intellectuals and was awarded the Academic Prize of the Fukuoka Prize in 2014.
