Symposium to Mark Universal Children’s DayToward a Society in which All Children can Grow Up in a Family Environment
November 20 is Universal Children’s Day. This year, November 20 marks the 25th anniversary of the UN General Assembly’s adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, which declares that children have the right to “grow up in a family environment.” This symposium will examine the current situation for children in Japan, including the introduction of Stork’s Cradle programs (also known as “baby hatches,” in which newborns can be left anonymously in the care of a hospital). Examples of other countries’ moves toward and away from the use of child-care institutions will also be introduced.
