The 1st Asia Philanthropy Congress

Tokyo

A very good morning to you all and thank you for attending the Asia Philanthropy Congress, the first attempt of its kind in Asia.

As all of you are aware the world is changing rapidly. In particular, the economic growth in Asia is remarkable. The eyes of the world are focused on the trends in Asia and its value is gaining importance in the world. However, there are also many social issues such as economic disparity, environmental problems and friction caused by cultural differences. I would like to express my respects to all for your commitment to realize a better world with the spirit of philanthropy in these difficult times when social problems are not possible for a single nation to solve alone.

This Congress is attended by leaders from foundations private businesses, and NGOs, totaling to 18 organizations from 9 countries. While governments and non-profit sectors have played the central role in the past, corporations are today not only fulfilling their corporate social responsibilities but they are establishing their own foundations realizing the growing importance of their responsibility in solving social issues. I also hope that the business sector will bring in innovative perspectives that both the public sector and the non-profit sector have not yet been aware of. I believe that when like-minded people like us share and discuss each one’s valuable experiences and knowledge and challenges while respecting each other’s position, we can forge possibilities for collaboration toward the realization of a better society. The Nippon Foundation will also cooperate with such progressive efforts.

So, my fellow participants, let us all be prepared to take the risk and join hands together in solidarity with a strong conviction to achieve a better society. And let us work together to make a better society a reality by solving the rapidly changing and ever-increasing challenges in Asia. Thank you.
