Photo Exhibition – “To Think about Leprosy is to Think about People”
The last Sunday of January each year is designated as World Leprosy Day, which will be observed on January 25 this year. To mark this occasion, the Nippon Foundation has launched a “Think Leprosy Now” campaign to promote awareness of issues related to leprosy, and a photo exhibition is being held as part of that campaign.
Titled “To Think about Leprosy is to Think about People,” the exhibition seeks to promote a wider understanding of leprosy and its associated history, and to encourage people to think about issues related to the disease that still exist today.
Leprosy is a disease that can be completely cured, leaving no trace if treated early, and there is no reason for discrimination against persons affected by leprosy. Nevertheless, stigma and discrimination against persons who have contracted the disease and their families remain firmly rooted around the world today. Shut off from society, persons affected by leprosy face groundless discrimination, depriving them of opportunities for education, employment, and participation in community life. The Think Leprosy Now campaign seeks to address these misconceptions.
