Back to Blue

Black to Blue is a joint project launched by The Nippon Foundation and Economist Impact to address urgent issues directly facing the world’s oceans, including chemical pollution and marine plastics.

Passing on the ocean’s bounty to the next generation

Back to Blue, a joint project of The Nippon Foundation and Economist Impact, has been working since its launch in 2021 to address urgent issues directly facing the world’s oceans, including plastic and chemical pollution and ocean acidification. The project has released a report on marine plastics that evaluates and ranks 25 countries on their ability to manage plastics from production to consumption. In the area of marine chemical pollution, the project issues white papers on the state of pollution at the global level and conducts surveys based on scientific data and evidence, and broadly disseminates the results in easy-to-understand formats including infographics and videos.
Back to Blue also holds international conferences and workshops throughout the year to engage the ocean community and beyond in deepening our understanding of these issues and formulating effective solutions to resolve them.
