Survey of Effectiveness of Places that Provide Comprehensive Support for Children Facing Difficulty

Outline | To understand the effects and details of support of the Children’s 3rd Place* program being carried out by The Nippon Foundation across Japan, a survey was conducted of staff at 32 facilities and of roughly 300 elementary school students and 300 of their parents or guardians. The survey results showed that students who have been regularly visiting these facilities and their parents saw improvements in things like study habits and daily routines, clearly demonstrating the effectiveness of places that provide comprehensive support for children.

Outline | The Nippon Foundation is compiling policy proposals, including this report, related to measures to address poverty among children living in Japan. This report surveyed the current status of childhood poverty in Japan and of the support provided by local governments. By making these recommendations to the national and local governments, the Foundation aims to create a stronger nationwide network of “third places” that are neither home nor school, where children facing difficulty can spend time with peace of mind. |
