Touring Exhibition Questions Common Assumptions Regarding Disabilities and ArtTURN is First Joint Exhibition of 4 Art Brut Museums
“TURN – From Land to Sea (Exploring People’s Innate Capabilities),” Japan’s first nationally touring exhibition of art brut works sponsored by four museums dedicated to art brut, is moving to its second location, the Tomonotsu Museum in Hiroshima Prefecture. A media viewing and an opening event for the general public will be held on February 1, to mark the exhibition’s first day at the museum.
The TURN exhibition is touring from November 2014 to September 2015, visiting four museums that have been supported by the Nippon Foundation since their respective openings: the Tomonotsu Museum in Hiroshima Prefecture, the Museum of Art Warakoh in Kochi Prefecture, the Mizunoki Museum of Art in Kyoto Prefecture, and the Hajimari Art Center in Fukushima Prefecture.
The media viewing on February 1 will be led by Katsuhiko Hibino, curator of the TURN exhibition, and Nobumasa Kushino, curator of the Tomonotsu Museum.
The opening event will feature explanations by Hibino and Kushino of the works being exhibited, to enable attendees to better understand the meaning of TURN as a new perspective. This will be followed by a roundtable discussion on the intersection of art and social welfare by the curators of the four alternative art museums, which emphasize social welfare in their collections.
