UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction: Public ForumWhole-Community Approach to Disaster Risk Reduction that Includes Persons with Disabilities
Persons with disabilities, children, the elderly, and women can be especially vulnerable in times of disaster, and have a variety of needs. This was demonstrated by the fact that the percentage of people with disabilities who died or were injured as a result of the Great East Japan Earthquake was higher than for the region’s general population.
This public forum will discuss inclusive disaster preparedness from 2015, looking at how to meet a diverse variety of needs, including those of disabled persons, in disaster planning, drills, and life in evacuation centers, as well as ways in which persons with disabilities can contribute to these efforts, and the importance of taking a whole-community approach.
