Response to August 2026 Torrential Rains in Chiba and Typhoon Dujuan, and Request for Donations

The Nippon Foundation would like to extend its deepest condolences to all who have been affected by the torrential rains that struck Chiba Prefecture in August 2026 and Typhoon Dujuan, and their families.

Our thoughts are with everyone in the area as they endure days of uncertainty, and we hope that they remain safe and that their lives will return to normal as quickly as possible.

Areas of Chiba Prefecture have experienced record-breaking heavy rainfall from August 13, with homes and roads flooded and other damage in various areas.

Subsequently, on September 21, Typhoon Dujuan, the 25th named typhoon of 2026, directly struck the Kanto region including Chiba, causing further damage. Having been struck twice by major flooding in just a little more than one month has created an extremely difficult situation for the residents of this region.

The effects of the rainfall continue to disrupt the daily lives of people in these areas in various ways. Support tailored to the situation in these areas is urgently needed so that residents can live with peace of mind as quickly as possible.

The Nippon Foundation is confirming the situation in affected areas and the support needed, and working with local governments, disaster-relief NGOs, and other organizations to ensure that the assistance that is required is delivered quickly.

Donations received will be used to support activities needed in the area, including support for the daily lives of local residents and for activities being carried out by NGOs and volunteer organizations, as well as for residents requiring specific considerations in times of disasters, including older residents, residents with disabilities, and young children.

On September 21, Typhoon Dujuan, the 25th named typhoon of 2026, directly struck Chiba Prefecture and the surrounding Kanto region, causing even further damage. The same region being struck twice by heavy rainfall in the space of a little more than one month has had extremely severe effects. To provide sufficient relief to the area as quickly as possible, The Nippon Foundation has integrated an Emergency Relief Fund for Typhoon No. 25 into the existing Emergency Relief Fund for the August 2026 Chiba Torrential Rains, and extended the period for accepting donations. 

Period for accepting donations: Until October 31, 2026 (subject to change)

Donations already made to the Emergency Relief Fund for the August 2026 Chiba Torrential Rains will be used to rebuild the lives of residents and for the recovery and reconstruction of the region affected by Typhoon Dujuan, in addition to the region of Chiba affected by torrential rain in August, which largely overlap.

With the same areas having been struck twice within such a short period of time, conditions in the region remain severe. Given the situation, the integrated use of donations already received will make it possible to provide uninterrupted support to the region quickly and flexibly.
