TURN Exhibition Moves to 3rd LocationTouring Exhibition Questions Common Assumptions Regarding Disabilities and Art

“TURN – From Land to Sea (Exploring People’s Innate Capabilities),” Japan’s first nationally touring exhibition of works including art brut sponsored by four museums dedicated to art brut, is moving to its third location, the Hajimari Art Center in Fukushima Prefecture. A media viewing and an opening event for the general public will be held on April 18, to mark the exhibition’s first day at the museum.

The TURN exhibition, which seeks to explore the meanings of disability and artistic expression, is touring Hajimari Art Center in Fukushima Prefecture, the Mizunoki Museum of Art in Kyoto Prefecture, the Tomonotsu Museum in Hiroshima Prefecture, and the Museum of Art Warakoh in Kochi Prefecture, the from November 2014 to September 2015.

The media viewing on April 18 will be led by Takayoshi Okabe, director of the Hajimari Art Center.

The opening event will feature a gallery talk exploring the meaning of TURN as a new perspective, with TURN curator Katsuhiko Hibino and Takayoshi Okabe explaining the works on display. This will be followed by a roundtable discussion on the broadest meanings of art and social welfare by the curators of the four alternative art museums, which emphasize social welfare in their collections.
